8849 Tank 4 Pro Review: Phone With a Projector

25 dec. 2025Zino

I tested the 8849 Tank 4 Pro rugged smartphone. Here is how the built-in DLP projector, 11,600mAh battery, and night vision camera hold up in daily use.

The built-in DLP projector on the 8849 Tank 4 Pro is not a gimmick, but you will only get good results from it if you pull the curtains shut. Paired with a massive 11,600mAh battery that easily covers three full days of heavy use, this device solves the problem of needing a portable movie setup and an indestructible power station in one brick. The trade-off is brutal weight, because carrying 530 grams in your pocket is something you will feel every single minute.

8849 sent me the Tank 4 Pro to test, but they did not pay me for this review and had no say in what I think. When I checked the price on 25 December 2025, the base model with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage was priced at $610 on the official 8849 store, while the 18GB RAM and 1TB storage version sat at $700. You can also pick it up via AliExpress.

How the built-in projector performs in daily use

The projector on the top rim is the headline feature here, and it is surprisingly competent for hardware squeezed into a mobile frame. It outputs a 720p resolution image using DLP technology rated at 100 ISO lumens. As I said in my video, "Yes, it's 720p, but for having this in a phone, it's just crazy." The laser autofocus dials the image in within roughly two seconds, and the automatic vertical keystone correction straightens the frame without you having to mess around in manual settings menus.

Brightness is where reality checks in. At 100 ISO lumens, projecting in an office with open blinds gives you a faint, washed-out image that is barely watchable. In a dark room or at night in a tent, the picture is crisp, colors look natural, and contrast is completely acceptable for movies or YouTube streaming. As I noted during my bedroom tests, "I have no TV in the bedroom, and using this is just insane." Aiming it straight at the ceiling while lying in bed worked without any fuss.

In a pitch-black room, the 720p DLP beam produces a sharp, bright image.

The company claims up to six hours of continuous projection time on a full charge. In my testing, running a full two-hour movie dropped the battery by approximately 30%. An internal cooling fan kicks on automatically when projection starts. You hear a soft hum, but it keeps the phone body cool to the touch and prevents thermal throttling during extended viewings.

Design, durability, and dealing with 530 grams in your hand

This phone is thick, aggressive, and undeniably heavy. Tipping the scales at roughly 530 grams, it is lighter than the older Tank 3 Pro, but it remains more than double the weight of a typical flagship. Dropping this into loose sweatpants will pull them down. As I said in the review, "If you want the thinnest, lightest phone, this isn't it."

What you get in exchange is genuine structural protection. The body is certified for IP68 water submersion and IP69K high-pressure, hot-water spray resistance. The corners are reinforced with thick rubber bumpers, and the rear incorporates an oversized camping floodlight that can illuminate an entire campsite or work area. Port covers protect the 3.5mm headphone jack and the USB-C port, which supports USB 3.0 speeds along with DisplayPort video output. You can plug this phone directly into an external monitor with a single cable if you want desktop video out without using the projector.

AMOLED screen and everyday performance

Unlike many rugged phones that cut corners on the front glass, the Tank 4 Pro packs a 6.73-inch AMOLED panel running at 3K resolution (1440 x 3200 pixels) with a 120Hz refresh rate. Colors pop, blacks are absolute, and scrolling feels fluid. A native 4K display would have been nice to see on a phone this oversized, but 1440p at this screen size is dense enough that you cannot spot individual pixels.

Under the hood, the phone runs stock Android 15 powered by a 4nm MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor. Combined with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage on my test unit, app launches are instantaneous and background apps do not constantly reload. I put it through Call of Duty Mobile at high settings, and the gameplay ran at a steady frame rate without frame drops. The internal cooling fan that helps with projection also aids long gaming sessions, exhausting heat out through the top vents.

Battery life, charging times, and reverse charging

Inside the chassis sits an 11,600mAh battery. For context, regular smartphones rarely cross 5,500mAh. In real-world testing with mixed use, including messaging, video playback, web browsing, and short projector demonstrations, the phone ran for three full days and still had 20% left in reserve. When you leave the charger behind for a long weekend off the grid, this device simply will not die on you.

Charging that much capacity could easily take half a day, but the included 120W charging brick fixes that problem. Plugged into the wall, the battery went from 10% to 100% in approximately one hour. The device also supports reverse wired charging, which means you can connect an iPhone or camera accessories directly to the Tank 4 Pro and use it as an emergency power bank.

Camera performance and the infrared night vision test

The rear module houses three sensors: a 50MP Samsung main camera, a 50MP telephoto camera, and a 64MP infrared night vision camera. The front holds a 32MP selfie camera. In bright daylight, the 50MP main sensor captures sharp images with decent dynamic range and realistic colors. Zooming in with the 50MP telephoto yields crisp results for distant objects.

Outdoor daytime photography produces natural colors and balanced contrast.

Low-light performance on the primary camera is where things stumble. In dim indoor lighting, the main sensor struggles, introducing visible grain and softness into darker areas. The 64MP night vision camera makes up for it in total darkness. Backed by infrared LEDs, it illuminates objects well past 15 meters, giving you clear monochrome security footage where the human eye cannot see anything at all. It is genuinely useful for checking your surroundings around a dark camp.

Who should buy the 8849 Tank 4 Pro and who should skip it

This phone is built for a very specific crowd. If you spend time camping, working on rough construction sites, or traveling off-grid, the mix of three-day battery life, drop resistance, powerful floodlights, and a built-in movie projector is unbeatable. It eliminates the need to pack a separate speaker, power bank, flashlight, and projector into your travel bag.

If you want a comfortable daily phone to slip into your front pocket on your commute, skip it. The 530-gram bulk is exhausting for regular single-handed use, and the 100-lumen projector is useless in bright living rooms. You are buying this for outdoor adventures and extreme utility, not for sleek aesthetics.

Frequently asked questions

How bright is the built-in projector on the 8849 Tank 4 Pro?

The projector outputs 100 ISO lumens at a 720p resolution. It is sharp and bright in a pitch-black room or inside a dark tent, but ambient daylight or room lights will wash the projection out significantly.

In mixed everyday testing, the battery lasted three full days with roughly 20% charge left over. Running the projector continuously for a two-hour movie consumed approximately 30% of the total battery.

How much does the Tank 4 Pro cost?

When checked on 25 December 2025, the 8849 Tank 4 Pro retailed for $610 for the 16GB RAM and 512GB storage version, and $700 for the 18GB RAM and 1TB storage edition.

Is the Tank 4 Pro significantly different from the Tank 3 Pro?

The Tank 4 Pro introduces a sharper 3K AMOLED screen running at 120Hz, an upgraded Dimensity 8300 chipset, and Android 15 out of the box, while dropping some weight compared to the bulkier Tank 3 Pro.
